Our first challenge in the “Ocean Walker” series is the Cook Strait Swim. The route is 22.19km (around 14 miles) and separates the North and South New Zealand islands. It is regarded as the premier open water swimming challenge in New Zealand and it is notorious for its treacherous tides, big waves, cold waters and even sharks. Many people have tried and failed to make the crossing. Adam Walker completed the swim in 8 hrs and 39 minutes on the 22nd April 2014. He was escorted for over 1.5 hours by dolphins with a shark underneath him. He battled sea sickness and very cold temperatures to achieve his goal. You’ll have from the 1st October until 14th November to complete the challenge. Everyone who completes the challenge will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a copy of Adam’s Autobiography as well as a host of Zoggs goodies including a pair of Adam’s specially designed “Ocean Walker” goggles. To take part, simply join the challenge and connect your SWIMTAG account to Zoggs on your settings page. Swims can be uploaded using a SWIMTAG system at your local pool, using an Apple iWatch, a Garmin swim watch or manually using the swimtag website.
Adam says "I wish everyone well on this challenge, remember it's just one arm in front of the other, stay focused and you will reach the South Island in no time! Never Give Up on Your Dreams".
Cook Strait, which separates the North and South islands, is the premier open water swimming challenge in New Zealand, and is notorious for its treacherous tides and cold waters. Many people have tried and failed to make the crossing, but of those who have succeeded a few stand out because of their age, or because they were first or fastest.
To date, only 93 successful crossings have been made by 83 individuals from 10 countries.
