The Chicago River, although short in distance, is one of the most well known rivers in the United States, not just because it’s famously dyed green on St Patrick’s Day but also because it’s flow was reversed by engineers in the early 1900’s when the city was worried about potential flooding. It used to flow into Lake Michigan, but now takes water out of the Great Lake and into the Des Plaines River. Your 12 mile (19km) swim will begin in South Chicago at the mouth of the less well known Calumet River. From there you’ll swim North, past South Shore and Jackson Park, then by Indian Village, Oakland and 31st Street Beach. You’ll keep heading North, past the Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium taking in breathtaking views of the city skyline, finishing at Navy Pier, close to what used to be the mouth of the Chicago River (but is now the source).
