The Mississippi River runs through the heart of the United States, from Minniesoda in the north, to Louisiana in the south where it drains into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the major cities on the river is St Louis, Missouri. Famous for its large Gateway Arch, it was a regional center for Native American Mississippian Culture, before being settled by Europeans, initially French fur merchants, who named it after Louis IX. The stretch you will be swimming denotes the border between Missouri and Illinois. We begin in the north of the city at the Chain of Rocks Bridge. From there you’ll head south past Mosenthein Island, Old North St Louis and the Gateway Arch. You’ll continue through Marine Villa, Mount Pleasant and Patch before finishing at the Jefferson Barracks Bridge, a total distance of 21 miles (31km).
